On Oct. 13, 2006, Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate --- Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh.

Muhammad Yunus (Born June 28, 1940) is a Bangladesh economist, the founder of Grameen Bank. He is referred to as “Banker to the poor”.
Muhammad Yunus developed microcredit, which specifically serves entrepreneurs who are too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. He is the founder of Bangladesh Grameen Bank. In 2006, Yunus and Grameen Bank received the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts through microcredit to create economic and social development from below”. Yunus himself has received over 60 awards, including President's Award, Bangladesh (1978), Bangladesh Bank Award, Bangladesh (1985), World Food Prize (1994), Sydney Peace Prize (1998), and The Economist newspaper’s Prize for social and economic innovation (2004).
