The CJAR Special Issue Symposium on Bank-Deregulation and Corporate Finance in China

The China Journal of Accounting Research (hereafter, CJAR) Special Issue Symposium on Bank-Deregulation and Corporate Finance in China was successfully held in Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), Guangzhou, China on 28-29 April 2016, hosted by the Sun Yat-Sen Business School.

The symposium was opened by Prof. Minghai Wei, SYSU Vice President, and Prof. Gerald Lobo from University of Houston, who is the guest editor for this special issue symposium. They thanked everyone’s support for the CJAR, reviewed the history of CJAR, and placed high hopes on CJAR’s future development. Then, four keynote lectures were given by Prof. Jun Qian (Vice president of Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Prof. Gerald Lobo (University of Houston), Mr. Feng Sun (Former Chairman of Penghua Fund Management Company), and Prof. Shahrokh Saudagaran (University of Washington Tacoma), titled with “In the Shadow of Banks: Wealth Management Products and Issuing Banks’ Risk in China”, "
Accounting Research in Banking”, "Commercial Banks’ Innovative Transformation and Regulation”, and "Corporate Social Responsibility: Research Evidence on Business Impacts”, accordingly.

Six high-quality research papers related to this symposium topic were presented. The presenters are Qiang Wu (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Hyo Jin Kim (Jeonju University, Korea), Kevin Ow Yong (Singapore Management University), Xing Liu (Dongbei University of Finance and Economics), Hui Ma (Inner Mongolia University), and Xinfeng Jiang (Zhongnan University of Economics and Law). In addition, high-level discussions were given following each presentation and the discussants are with important academic influence. They are Prof. Oliver Rui (China Europe International Business School), Prof. Xijia Su (China Europe International Business School), Prof. Cong Wang (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Prof. Danlu Bu (Southwest University of Finance and Economics), Prof. Yu Xin (Sun Yat-Sen University), and Prof. Liping Xu (Sun Yat-Sen University). Since there was enough time for presentations and discussions, the participants had sufficient communication, and the atmosphere was very active.

Finally, Prof. Yunguo Liu (Sun Yat-Sen University) granted the best paper award for one Chinese paper and one English paper. The winners are Chu Yeong Lim and Kevin Ow Yong from Singapore Management University, whose paper is “Regulatory Pressure and Income Smoothing by Banks in Response to Anticipated Changes to the Basel Accord”, and Shenglan Chen and Hui Ma from Inner Mongolia University, whose paper is “Bank De-regulation and Company Business Credit”.

Founded in 2008, the CJAR has held international academic conferences for many times, and is becoming the most important academic communication platform in the area of China-related accounting and finance research. According to the statistic of Science Direct database, the number of CJAR paper downloads is increasing tremendously these years, which is 23,966 in year 2012, 58,487 in year 2013, 133,509 in year 2014, and 153,694 in year 2015. CJAR was recently included by the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), which means the CJAR papers can be searched and downloaded from Web of Science database now.
