Professor Wang Fan: building the international hub airport should three-pronged

The Terminal 2 of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport has been formally put into operation, which greatly enhances the operation capacity of Guangzhou Airport, and also rapidly enhances the position and role of hub airport of Guangzhou in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Airport Network. With the capacity base of hub airport to further enhance the airport connectivity, Guangzhou Airport will be connected to more cities in the world and add more frequent flight plans in the future.

The and enhancement of airport connectivity and the highlight of scale effect can provide more convenient, fast and economical diversified choices, and attract more passengers and cargo owners in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to first select Guangzhou Baiyun Airport as the international hub airport. It is found in many researches and management practices in the world that hub airport with high core competitiveness can not only greatly promote the development of related economic forms in the airport area, but also have a very positive role in promoting the overall socio-economic development of the city and its surrounding areas. In addition to enhancing capacity and promoting scale effect mentioned above, the following three aspects are particularly noteworthy in building international hub airport:

Promote the internal operation level and service quality of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport. While expanding the operation capacity and volume, internal operation level and service quality are the key to win customers, in which aspect Guangzhou Baiyun Airport still have much room to improve, such as scientifically configuring and allocating various kinds of service resources and facilities in airport, further optimizing the operation process with the help of Internet technology, improving the service experience of transfer passengers and high-end passengers by building Airport Complex, and the customer-centered collaborative optimization with customs, immigration inspection, inspection and quarantine, and other administrative departments.

Promote the integration and development of the multi-mode transport between Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and airlines, high-speed rails, expressways and urban rail transit. Hub airport is just an important part of air transport and logistics service, customers usually pay more attention to the quality and level of the whole service chain. In the aspect of providing fast, seamless and integrated high quality solutions through the cooperation and integration with airlines, high-speed rails, expressways, subways and other related transport service providers, the experience and practice of Hong Kong International Airport is worthy of reference.

Promote the complementary and coordinated development of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and Hong Kong International Airport, Shenzhen airport and other hub airports in Greater Bay Area. Since the several hub airports in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area can be easily be replaced from the perspective of geographical position, competition and cooperation will be the eternal theme. If the airports in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Shenzhen can carry out coordination and cooperation under certain mechanism to explore the differentiation and complementation in route positioning and service products and further enhance the degree of integration between each other, the three parties will get benefits, which will ultimately benefit the overall economic-social development and the construction of peoples livelihood of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Perhaps in the future, we will call them Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Airport.

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has its unique advantages in the world. New York, London and Tokyo take the a central city as the core, but Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has the network formed by three major cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The characteristic of multi-hub network will become the theme of the airport layout of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. At the same time, there are different economic, law and financial systems, as well as different customs, trade and entry-exit systems in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. On the one hand, this determines that the airport layout of Greater Bay Area has great room for optimization and upgrading, and has the foundation and ability to surpass other bay areas; on the other hand, this also brings extremely complex management situations and challenges.

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has provided the most attractive and difficult research and application scene in international airport economy and management, and the whole world is waiting to see.
