2nd SYSBS International Week Successfully Held

The 2nd SYSBS International Week was successfully held on both the East and South campuses from November 12 - 18, 2012. With the theme of "International Talent," the International Week included such activities as the International Week opening ceremony and lecture on international talent, the study abroad program opening day, the study abroad program photo exhibition, company visits, basketball match, an English dubbing competition, and the closing party.

 

I.  Opening Ceremony and Lecture on International Talent, November 12

On the evening of November 12, the International Week Opening Ceremony and a lecture on the theme of International Talent were held on the East Campus. In attendance were Ms. Yao Xu, Deputy Director of the SYSU Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, Dr. Chris Hassall, SYSBS Honorary Professor of Marketing and retired Global External Relations Officer with Procter & Gamble, Prof. Yadong Luo, Honorary Professor and International Dean of SYSBS, Prof. Fan Wang, Associate Dean of SYSBS, and representatives from the Office of Students Affairs and the Office of International Affairs.

Deputy Director Xu provided the official welcome on behalf of Sun Yat-sen University, and was followed by Prof. Luo, who declared the commencement of the 2nd International Week and gave an opening address. To highlight the "International Talent" theme of the 2012 International Week, Dr. Hassall gave a lecture to SYSBS students on the topic "Leadership in Action." Dr. Hassall impressed the audience with a meaningful lecture that was punctuated by his unerring good humor. A Q&A session, which allowed students the opportunity for direct discussion with Dr. Hassall, developed a passionate exchange of ideas on international talent, as well as on leadership and management.

II.  Study Abroad Photo Exhibition, November 6 - 18

With the theme of "Seize the Beauty Beside," the Study Abroad Photo Exhibition was displayed on both the East and South campuses throughout the International Week events, from November 12 - 18. The variety of locations represented in the exhibited photographs was a strong demonstration of the richness of the international experience that SYSBS students possess.

III.  Opening Day of SYSBS Study Abroad Programs, November 15

On November 15th, the Opening Day of the SYSBS Study Abroad Programs information sessions was held on the East campus. The Office of International Affairs introduced SYSBS outgoing programs and presented an overview of the application procedures, including advice for handling problems that may arise for students in the exchange program. As well, student representatives from international and local dual-degree programs, exchange programs, and summer programs supplied information on the various programs and shared their experiences studying abroad. A well-organized open discussion between international students and local students took place, providing more specific information about the SYSBS Study Abroad programs.

 
 

IV.  Company Visit to IBM in Shenzhen, November 16

On November 16th, SYSBS students visited the corporate facilities of IBM at Shenzhen Center. IBM representatives gave the group a warm welcome, detailing the history and culture of IBM, and introducing students to what it means to be an "IBMer." The Human Resources manager shared her personal experiences of working with IBM, including useful advice concerning international opportunities at IBM and more general career advice. Students were able to tour the production line, observing first-hand the production process of a prestigious multinational company.

V.  Basketball Match, November 17

On November 17th, with the theme of "Boundless Sports, Endless Friendship," the final round of the Five-Player Basketball Match was successfully held on the East campus. Each team included both local and international students. Blouses Group won the championship with remarkable skills and splendid teamwork. Winds Group won the second prize, followed by MVP team. The match has not only strengthened their friendship between SYSBS International students and local students, but has also demonstrated their mental outlook of harmony, unity and hard work.

 
 

VI.  English Dubbing Competition and Closing Party, November 18

On November 18th, the English Dubbing Competition and the Closing Party took place on the East campus, which was also the 1st English Dubbing Competition hosted by SYSBS. Dr. Xiaoyan Lu, Director of Office of International Affairs, Mr. Tao Zeng, Director of Career Development & Alumni Office, Mr. Hailin Yao, Associate Director of the MBA Program and Ms. Xiaoli Huang, Assistant Professor of Department of Management Science were invited to be the judges. Each team involved at least two members, including both local and international students. Focusing on The Vigor of Youth, Nima Team won the first place among all the 14 teams with an excellent performance with a fund of 1,000 RMB. Both the judges and the audience’s response to this competition was ardent and wonderful. The Closing Party was held after the competition, where students enjoyed themselves by tasting delicious deserts and beer and watching various shows. The atmosphere reached its climax with cocktail making and hip-pop dancing. At the end of the party, everybody danced together in the middle with laughing and clapping full of the room. The party ended in a warm atmosphere and everyone was very much looking forward to the 3rd International Week.

Through a series of week-long activities, a powerful platform was created not only for the communication and development of our academic research, but also for our international exchange cooperation. In a series of activities featuring the topic of  "International Talent", both local and internatioanl students were offered an opportunity to interact with each other. In these activities, they have enhanced their global outlook, deepened their understanding and respect of different ethnics, societies and cultures. The 2nd SYSBS International Week has also promoted the internationalization of SYSBS and strengthened its global competiveness.
