The 3rd SYSBS International Week Concluded Successfully
With the theme of “Business and Social Responsibility”, the 3rd SYSBS International Week concluded successfully on both East and South campuses. The events took place from November 12 to 17, and included the Opening Ceremony and a featured lecture focusing on corporate social responsibility, the Study Abroad Photography Competition, opening day for the Study Abroad programs, and a company visit, As well, participants enjoyed a basketball match, the English Short Drama Contest, and the Closing Party.
I. Opening Ceremony and Lecture on Corporate Social Responsibility, November 12
On the evening of November 12, the 3rd SYSBS International Week Opening Ceremony and Lecture on Corporate Social Responsibility was held on the East Campus. The events were attended by Dr. Chris Hassall, Former P&G Global External Relations Officer, Ms. XU Yao, Deputy Director of SYSU Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, Prof. LUO Yadong, SYSBS International Dean, and Ms. Dai Honghui, Deputy Secretary of SYSBS CPC Committee, as well as representatives from the Office of Students’ Affairs and the Office of International Affairs.
Ms. XU Yao and Prof. LUO Yadong presented the opening address and declared the commencement of the 3rd International Week. Dr. Chris Hassall then gave an excellent lecture on the topic of “Corporate Social Responsibility”. Through various examples of P&G’s contributions to corporate social responsibility, Dr. Chris Hassall impressed the audience with the importance of corporate social responsibility for a large enterprise. Students listened carefully, recognizing the value to be gained from Dr. Hassall’s experience. The Q&A period allowed students an opportunity for face-to face discussion, resulting in a passionate and informative exchange of ideas on developing a strong business sense, on career development, and particularly on the role of social responsibility in the modern corporate environment.
II. Study Abroad Photo Competition, October 15 to November 14
With this year’s theme of “A Wonderful Moment of Exchange“, the photography competition was held from October 15 to November 14. The goal of the event is to use photography to provide a tastes of the different lives of SYSBS overseas exchange students, as well as to show the international students’ impressions of China.
The Photo Exhibition was held on the East Campus on November 14 – 15, providing an opportunity for students to experience the local customs and practices from the perspective of SYSBS exchange students, as well as to observe the natural beauty of the different countries.
III. Opening Day of SYSBS Study Abroad Programs, November 14
On November 14, the Opening Day of SYSBS Study Abroad Programs was held on the East Campus.Representatives from the Office of International Affairs, SYSBS international students, and local students who have experience in exchange programs were invited to introduce the procedures, to share experiences, and to interact with students who intend to study abroad. In the open discussion segment, students not only learned about the SYSBS exchange programs and partnership universities, but they also enjoyed the foreign culture and anecdotes of student experiences.
IV. Company Visit to Zhujiang Brewery Company, November 15
On November 15, SYSBS students visited Zhujiang Brewery Company in Guangzhou. Representatives from Zhujiang Brewery Company received the group graciously, and introduced Zhujiang Brewery’s history and culture. In keeping with one of the major themes of this year’s International Week, they also presented a thorough introduction to the company’s activities for corporate social responsibility, and a vision for the future. Students also visited the company museum and the production line, giving them a close look at the well-known enterprise.
V. 3 on 3 Basketball Match, November 16
On November 16, with the theme of “Boundless Sports, Endless Friendship”, the knockout rounds and final rounds of the 3 on 3 Basketball Match were played on the East Campus, and were greatly enjoyed by players and spectators alike. Each team included both local and international students. After two rounds of the elimination series, with all teams showing strong skills and splendid teamwork, three teams beat five other teams to win the top three prizes. Displaying camaraderie and sportsmanship, both participants and supporters enjoyed the spirit of competitive sports and boundless friendship.
VI. English Short Drama Competition and Closing Party, November 17
With the theme of “The Melody of Youth”, the Final Round of the English Short Drama Competition successfully concluded on the East Campus on November 17, providing an excellent platform for English speakers and drama lovers to enjoy the charm of the language in a dramatic format, and to experience different cultures. Mr. Zeng Tao, Director of Career Development & Alumni Office, and Mr. Li Yuehan from Office of Students’ Affairs, were invited to be the judges.
Each team involved at least three members, including both local and International students. Focusing on “The Melody of Youth”, team 5436 won First Place out of the five teams, all of whom gave excellent performances. The Closing Party was held after the competition, and students enjoyed delicious desserts and drinks as they watched a variety of other entertainments. The celebration reached a climax with dancing to hip-hop music. Everyone in attendance shared in the laughter talk. The party ended with a warm atmosphere and with much anticipation for the 4th International Week next year.
Through a series of activities, a powerful platform has been created not only for the communication and development of academic research at SYSBS, but also for our international exchange cooperation. Each year, the International Week events present a golden opportunity for SYSBS to improve its international reputation and cultivate better understandings for international teaching, and the 2013 festivities were no exception. In a series of activities featuring the topic of “Business and Social Responsibility”, all local and international students were granted an opportunity to interact with each other, to enhance their global outlook, and to deepen their understanding of and respect toward different ethnicities, societies, and cultures.
