On April 2, SYSBS received a delegation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) who visited to discuss future cooperation between the two institutions. Representatives of SYSBS included Prof. Zhongfei Li, Executive Dean, Prof. Jingsong Tan, CPC Secretary, Mr. Yu Lan, Associate Dean, and Mr. Xiangpeng Jin, Assistant Dean. Attending for the HKJC were Mr. Ng Ming Hoi, HKJC Secretary of Mainland Affairs, and Mr. Wei Liu, Director of Governmental Affairs, Guangzhou Office.

The HKJC was founded in 1884 as an amateur organization to promote horse racing, yet evolved to become a premier professional sports institution. The Club not only provides horse racing events, but also hosts a range of sports and entertainment activities. Moreover, the Club is a major non-governmental community benefactor. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust was established in 1993, formalizing the Club's commitment to a strong charitable role that began in the 1950s. The Trust serves four principal areas of civic and social need: sports, recreation, and culture; education and training; community services; and medical and health programs.

For the past ten years, the average annual contributions to charitable and community programs by the HKJC have been 1 billion HK dollars (which is approximately US $130 million). Educational institutions are one of the primary beneficiaries of the HKJC support.

In his introductory remarks, Mr. Ng explained long-range plans for the Club: “HKJC has four major business —horse racing, soccer gambling, membership service, and philanthropy. So far, soccer gambling and membership service have moved into mainland China. We are now developing the racecourse in Conghua City, Guangdong Province, as an ideal opportunity for expansion of the horse-racing program. Next we’ll consider bringing the charitable sector into mainland China, too.”

The meeting provided the HKJC delegation with a deeper understanding of SYSBS — its history, its development as a top-ranked educational institution, and its commitment to social responsibilities. Both teams agreed that a partnership of stable, insightful, and long-term studies and cooperative programs would be advantageous, and would bring benefit to SYSBS and to the HKJC.
