Successful Running of Expert Meeting for “Double First-rate” Discipline Construction ofBusiness Administration at Sun Yat-sen University

????On June 24, the expertmeeting for “Double First-rate” discipline construction of businessadministration at Sun Yat-sen University was held in M202 of the Shansi Hall atour school. The attendees included the leaders of our department, the heads ofscientific research teams and the staff of the Scientific Research andPostgraduate Education Office. The meeting was presided over by President WangFan, and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University Li Shanmin also attended themeeting.

In the meeting, the “Double First-rate” construction scheme of businessadministration discipline at Sun Yat-sen University was demonstrated by anexpert group led by Professor Chen Xiaohong. The members of the expert group weinvited for the meeting included the famous scholar in the field of businessadministration and President of Hunan University of Commerce Professor ChenXiaohong, Vice President of Jinan University Professor Song Xianzhong, Directorof the Development and Reform Strategy Committee in the Economics andManagement School at Tongji University Professor Li Yuan, Dean of the School ofEconomics and Business Administration at Chongqing University Professor LiuXing, Dean of the School of Tourism and Service at Nangkai University ProfessorBai Changhong, Changjiang scholar in Aetna School of Management at ShanghaiJiaotong University Professor Liu Yi, and Changjiang scholar in the School ofBusiness at Sun Yat-sen University.????

Before convening of theexpert meeting, Vice President Li Shanmin delivered a welcome speech on behalfof our university, warmly welcoming the experts and scholars who attended themeeting, and expressing sincere gratitude to those experts for their selflesshelp and support for the business administration discipline construction of ouruniversity. He introduced to the experts about the “Double First-rate” program,and also said that the “Double First-rate” construction was both a rareopportunity and a severe challenge for our university, which was the reasonthat we have to make good planning to promote the construction coordinately,especially focusing on the construction of the key national disciplines ofbusiness administration. Our university attached great importance to and hadrepeatedly organized discussions of first-rate discipline construction. Wehoped that attending experts may help diagnose existing problems in businessadministration and put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the futureconstruction and development of the discipline, in order to further promote thebusiness administration construction to reach the goal of first-rate level inChina and over the world.??

Report on the “Double First-rate”discipline construction scheme of business administration by Dean Wang Fan

Dean Wang Fan made adetailed report on the “Double First-rate” discipline construction scheme ofbusiness administration at Sun Yat-sen University from the aspect of thediscipline construction foundation, construction objective, constructioncontent and expected result. Wang Fan firstintroduced the foundation of discipline construction. As one of the earliestbusiness administration disciplines in China, the business administration atSun Yat-sen University has sound foundation and has maintained a steady benigndevelopment trend, which ranked second during the latest discipline assessmentof Ministry of Education. Our department has undertaken a great number ofresearch projects and yielded plentiful achievements by virtue of excellentteaching staff and a wide range of international partners through deepuniversity-industry cooperation with various industries and the society.President Wang Fan said that they were striving to create a first-classbusiness administration discipline. He put forward a comprehensive disciplineconstruction idea characterized by opening and sharing, management practice,China-based situation, field intersection, mechanism practice and servingsociety. He also proposed specific construction plans and measures from theperspective of talent training, scientific research, social services andcultural inheritance and innovation, teaching staff construction andinternational cooperation, etc.

The expert grouplistened carefully to the report, and all of them agreed through on-the-spotinquiries and full discussion that the business administration constructionscheme was based on the actual situation of discipline development with clearconstruction idea, targeted construction objective, solid foundation fordiscipline construction, reasonable performance indicator and appropriatemeasures. As a result, the construction scheme passed in the end. At the sametime, the attending experts also offered pertinent suggestions and proposals interms of building first-class teaching staff, training top-notch innovativetalents, enhancing level of scientific research, condensing department-runningcharacteristics and focusing on promoting achievement transformation, etc. Theexperts considered that the university’s support was critical to theconstruction of first-rate discipline, and the university shall focus on thefirst-rate discipline construction by appropriating more funds, introducingmore talents and making preferential policies in this aspect in order tostimulate its development. In addition, we should build a goal-orienteddiscipline highlighting its own characteristics with a continuous developmentmechanism in order to construct a school of business with Chinesecharacteristics. In terms of scientific research, we should aim to addressnational realistic problems, serve national development and respond to majornational strategies.
