Strategic Management Society Special Conference China 2012
Through the joint efforts of SYSBS and the Strategic Management Society, the 2012 SMS Special Conference was held December 14 - 16. The conference marks the first cooperative event bringing together strategic management scholars from Chinese business schools and from international academic institutions. The conference was themed “Competing and Cooperating in and for China” and aimed not only to unveil the successful strategy concerning competition, cooperation, and cooperation-competition, but also to seek strategic options that will be beneficial for China. The main conference attracted more than 300 experts from Asia (52%), Europe (30%), North America (14%), South America (3%), and other regions (1%). In addition to presentations of the 91 papers accepted for the conference, a number of developmental sessions were held, taking place in 22 conference halls. Overall, the 2012 proceedings generated so many favorable comments that the SMS co-chairs designated this year’s sessions as the best SMS Special Conference to date.
The Special Conference was divided into two sessions. On December 14, Prof. Haiyang LI (CEIBS and Rice University) and Prof. Eric WK Tsang (University of Texas-Dallas) hosted a Paper Development Workshop (PDW) at SYSBS. Renowned editors-in-chief of international periodicals attended the PDW, including Ming-Jer CHEN (University of Virginia), Michael A. Hitt (Texas A&M University), Robert Hoskisson (Rice University) , Garry Bruton (Texas Christian University) , Stephen B. Tallman (University of Richmond), Marjorie A. Lyles (Indiana University), Margarethe Wiersema (University of California-Irvine), Anthea ZHANG (CEIBS and Rice University), and Tailan CHI (University of Kansas).

The second conference session was held at the Hotel Dong Fang on December 15 and 16. SYSBS International Dean Prof. Yadong LUO and Prof. Ming-Jer CHEN were conference convenors, and Professors Anthea ZHANG, Jeffrey Reuer (Purdue University) and Shujun ZHANG (SYSBS) acted as program co-chairs. Both international scholars and business community members attended and presented their academic works at the conference sessions, including Jay Barney (University of Utah), Michael A. Hitt, Marshall W. Meyer (University of Pennsylvania), Sea-Jin Chang (National University of Singapore), Laura Poppo (University of Kansas), Marjorie A. Lyles, Garry Bruton, Anja Tuschke (University of Munich), Margarethe Wiersema, Xinchun LI, Haiyang LI, Yuan LI (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Shige Makino (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Justin Tan (York University), George Yip (CEIBS), Xiangli Chen (GE China Technology Centre), and Kathy ZHANG (Philips Corporate Research).

The SMS Special Conference was composed of five different plenary panels. Jay Barney, Ming-Jer Chen, Michael A. Hitt, and Marshall W. Meyer delivered their unique points of view in the keynote plenary panel “Competing and Cooperating in and for China." Sea-Jin Chang, Yadong LUO, Laura Poppo, and Marjorie Lyles presented new theories and evidence in the panel “Collaborative Strategies in and for China,” and Garry Bruton, Anja Tuschke, and Margarethe Wiersema demonstrated cutting-edge opinions for the panel “Corporate Governance & Executive Leadership.” For the panel “Strategic Management Research in China – What’s Next?” Xinchun LI, Haiyang LI, Yuan LI, and Justin Tan illustrated concerns, but also conveyed an innovative consciousness of the directions the field may take. As well, George Yip, Xiangli CHEN, and Kathy ZHANG represented the business community, sharing methods used by western transnational corporations to deal with Chinese innovation. More than 300 registrants actively participated in the plenary panels and discussion sessions.

On Saturday night, SYSBS unveiled the charm of Guangzhou for international participants, as they enjoyed the lights and scenery of a night cruise along the Pearl River.
Sunday's banquet ceremonies featured the announement of awards for the best conference papers. SMS chairman Jay Barney brought the 2012 SMS Special Conference to a close, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and staff who made this year's events a success.
